All electrical installations deteriorate with age and use. They should therefore be inspected and tested at regular intervals to check whether they are in a satisfactory condition for continued use. Such safety checks are commonly referred to as 'Periodic Inspection and Testing'.
A periodic inspection is important to ensure any deficiencies, faults or damage to electrical systems are identified, to allow them to be resolved. Such issues can cause many problems from equipment operating incorrectly, through to significant risks such as Electric Shock or Fire.
The Electricity at Work Regulations 1989 state that:
“As may be necessary to prevent danger, all systems shall be maintained so as to prevent, so far as is reasonably practicable, such danger.”
The Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 states that:
The duty of care is placed upon ‘duty holders’, which apply to both the employer and employee to ensure the safety of all persons using the premises and its equipment.
